One of the great values of the Right Bank: Chateau la Vieille Cure, in the Fronsac appellation just west of Pomerol, has been making serious, polished wine since American owners revived the estate in 1986 and brought in Michel Rolland to consult. The 37-hectare vineyard is planted mostly to Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, on limestone, chalk and clay - and some Merlot vines push nearly a century old. The 2010 was a great Bordeaux vintage of power and structure, so this should be drinking beautifully now while still holding plenty in reserve. Polished, generous, and far more affordable than its Pomerol neighbors.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Bright ruby-red. Expressive aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice and violet, plus a hint of leathery rusticity. Deep, sweet and fine-grained, with tactile, palate-saturating flavors of dark raspberry and smoked meat. Finishes with broad, dusty, serious tannins and noteworthy length. A very impressive vintage for this chateau, this has the stuffing to age." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

91 points

"Always one of the ripest and most hedonistic of the Fronsacs, this wine again delivers the goods. Dense ruby/purple, with loads of black currant and licorice-infused black raspberry fruit, this wine has stunning density, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and impressive purity, texture and length. The high Merlot content always seems to ensure a wine that has accessibility young, but also has the potential to easily last for a decade or more. This is once again a major sleeper of the vintage." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

92 points

"This takes a modern approach, with a noticeable dose of dark, roasted espresso and chocolate up front, but remains grounded in the appellation's textbook racy chalk and charcoal profile. The core of lush fig, plum and blackberry fruit sits in reserve, and the finish is polished and long. Impressive. Best from 2015 through 2025."

More about Chateau la Vieille Cure

American collectors Colin Ferenbach and Peter Sachs bought this Fronsac gem in 1986, and they've been patient stewards ever since. Twenty hectares in a single block of riverside terroir produce wines with real substance—ripe, generous, and built to age. It's one of the right bank's most dependable addresses.
