Les Ormes-de-Pez has been Cazes family property since 1936 — the same family behind Lynch-Bages, and the wine here is raised in barrels passed down from that estate. It's a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in Saint-Estèphe, classically composed (Cabernet Sauvignon-led with a generous slug of Merlot) on the appellation's gravel-and-clay terraces. 2012 was the softer, earlier-drinking of recent Médoc vintages — a year that produced charming, supple wines built for medium-term enjoyment rather than long-haul cellaring. Now thirteen years on, this bottle is squarely in its drinking window, showing the dark fruit and savory iron-and-graphite signature of Saint-Estèphe with tannins fully resolved and tertiary notes just beginning to peek through.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2012 Les Ormes de Pez feels a little muffled on the nose, missing some complexity and terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, grippy but chunky and rather austere towards the finish. Lacks a bit of charm. A second bottle at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On confirmed that this is a rather disappointing Saint-Estèphe." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

87 points

"This is a soft, consumer-friendly style of wine from Les Ormes de Pez from the Cazes family, who have done so much for the village of Pauillac and their own wines, such as Lynch-Bages. They have turned out a luscious, dark ruby/purple wine with sweet cassis fruit, an uncomplicated, medium-bodied mouthfeel and very velvety tannin. Drink it over the next 7-8 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Black. First sample that seems a little tired on the nose. Lacks vitality and zest. But this may well be a sample thing. NB!!!" —Jancis Robinson MW

"This powerful wine is dense with rich tannins and black fruits that are balanced. Full and concentrated, it's a wine with great potential."
