One of the Medoc's great values, a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel that punches well above its appellation. Chateau Poujeaux farms the gravelly soils of Grand Poujeaux in Moulis-en-Medoc, making a structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux (with Merlot, plus a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) aged in French oak. The 2016 is a celebrated, age-worthy Left Bank vintage, and this bottle is still firmly built and youthful. Decant now for current drinking, or lay it down a few more years. Classic, dependable claret with real Medoc backbone.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Poujeaux has a seductive bouquet with dark chocolate-tinged red fruit, fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite concentrated, gentle grip, but just needs a little more precision towards the finish. Fine. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On tasting in London." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Poujeaux is scented of fried herbs, tar and earth with baked plums and a waft of rocks. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, chewy and herbal." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"A standout during the en primeur tastings that lives up to its initial promise now it's in bottle. Strong, confident flavours show clear Médoc character, with dark berry fruits, silky tannins, great balance and freshness. Lots of life ahead of it."

Wine Spectator

"A restrained style, but with a tasty core of juicy plum and red currant fruit that melds with light mulling spice, black tea and sanguine notes. There's a dusting of cedar on the finish. Drink now through 2028."

More about Chateau Poujeaux

Château Poujeaux is one of Bordeaux’s great insider wines. Unclassified in 1855, it nevertheless performs at the level of a 3rd or 4th growth. It’s reliable even in tough vintages, especially those afflicted by excessive rain. While a good deal more supple in youth than many of the top wines of the Left Bank, Poujeaux also ages splendidly for decades.

So why is it still an insider wine? Blame it on geography. Poujeaux hails from Moulis, an inland AOC tucked behind the Médoc’s more famous, gravel-rich appellations located nearer to the Gironde. As you move in from the estuary, the soils become sandier and flatter – not ideal for making great Bordeaux.

Moulis’ secret, however, is that it’s one of the few inland areas of the Médoc to boast deep gravelly soils, as well as a little elevation. This combination is crucial to growing healthy, fully ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. Not all of Moulis enjoys this superior terroir, but Château Poujeaux does, and it’s probably why it’s generally considered to be the appellation's greatest estate.
