Classic Sauternes from a top property, now with the honeyed complexity that only mature age brings. Chateau Rieussec lies in the commune of Fargues, neighboring Yquem, and is a First Growth in the 1855 Sauternes classification. Like all great Sauternes, it's made from Semillon-led fruit affected by botrytis (the 'noble rot' that concentrates sugars and adds depth), picked grape by grape over multiple passes. 1975 rewarded patience: a dry September and October meant the rot came on slowly, and the growers who held their nerve and picked late made rich but balanced wines that have aged extremely well. This bottle predates the Rothschilds of Lafite, who bought Rieussec in 1984, and at half a century old it should be all dried apricot, marmalade and caramel — assuming, as always with a wine this old, that it has been well kept. Stand it upright, decant off any sediment, and serve well chilled.

Robert Parker

90 points

"Still remarkably youthful looking, and slow to evolve, this is a powerful, concentrated, and rich Sauternes, with decades of life ahead of it. Lemon, tropical fruit, and vanillin oaky aromas titillate the olfactory glands. Tight, yet rich, full-bodied flavors reveal marvelous balance and richness. It is aging at a snail's pace."

More about Chateau Rieussec

Owned by Rothschild since 1984, this Sauternes First Growth makes wines of astonishing complexity. The oak aging and extended bottle age potential set Rieussec apart—these aren't immediately sweet or cloying, but layered and profound.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras, Roquefort and other blue cheeses, an apricot tart, or a wedge of aged Comte. At this age it is just as good on its own after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Sweet and unctuous but not heavy, with dried apricot, orange marmalade, caramel and a nutty, tea-like note from age. Acidity keeps it lifted; long, gently savory finish.
