Châteauneuf du Pape is one of France's three most famous—and most emulated—red wines in America. But unlike Burgundy and Bordeaux, it's a southern appellation, and the wines are full of Provençal sunshine, wild herbs from the hills (garrigue, as they call it), and spice that balances the fruit and stoniness.
CdP (as Châteauneuf is often known) sits at the top of the Southern Rhône hierarchy—a region that makes plenty of immediately delicious, fruit-forward wines. But what really sets Châteauneuf apart from its neighbors is the number of wines with the ability to age. And to age very, very well: mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a special treat, with umami complexity underpinning integrated soil and fruit flavors.
Our selection represents all sides of Châteauneuf, from fresh, young fruit-focused wines to fully mature vins de garde, and everything in between. We're always on the lookout for collections with great examples of well-stored, mature CdP—just like we're always on the lookout for reasonably priced, early-drinking gems.
