The tête de cuvée of the Santenots appellation, from heavy red clay soils that give wines of exceptional breadth and longevity. Domaine des Comtes Lafon owns nearly half of this Premier Cru vineyard. 1999 was a phenomenal vintage for red Burgundy—Dominique Lafon and critic Allen Meadows have called this "one of the finest wines ever produced at the Domaine." The estate began organic conversion in 1995. Expect expressive aromas of black cherry, dark berries, and chocolate.

"While the Clos des Chênes performed as expected relative to the cask sample, the final Santenots was even better than the cask sample. Wonderfully expressive with massive amounts of spicy black fruit and seductive flavors; the wine has an enormous amount of underlying material and is incredibly complex. But it's the length that defines this wine as it simply goes on and on. It's not hard to see why Lafon believes this is one of the finest wines ever produced at the Domaine. Simply magnificent."

"Very healthy dark color with just a hint of browning at the edge. Expressive aromas of black cherry, dark berries and chocolate. Seriously sweet and thick but in a distinctly powerful style, conveying a medicinal quality to its very ripe plum, dark cherry and mint flavors. The big tannins saturate the mouth and teeth. There's certainly no rush to drink this--and give it some time in a decanter if you decide to try it soon. "This was a time when we made very dense wines," said Dominique Lafon. "There wasn't an understanding of elegant wines in Burgundy then. And there was also more extraction." He went on: "This wine does not have the same tannins as the 2015 and 2016. In 1999 we punched down the cap every day, but in recent vintages we're only doing a total of three pigeages."" -Stephen Tanzer

"Some might regard my score for the 1999 as a bit mean, but this is a vintage that I find too ostentatious. It has a voluminous, brazen bouquet with saturated small dark cherries, dark plum and a touch of iodine – but for me, it seems to lack some class. The palate is very concentrated with thickset tannins, layers of glossy dark cherry and strawberry fruit that coat the plush tannic backbone. However, the finish is too sweet and consequently it does not entice another sip like the 1996, as if the wine is trying too hard to impress. In fact, although you could argue that analytically it is better than the 2000, it is the millennial wine I would choose to drink. Drink 2014-2025." -Neal Martin

"Magnum. Extremely lively and youthful with bitter cherry fruit, grainy texture, admirable tension still, and amazing persistence. All still to play for in magnum format. Chapeau!"

"Tannic, but here is a modern-style Pinot--dark in color, extracted, showing masses of fruit and tannins, with beautiful focus on black and red fruits and spicy notes. Time should soften it."

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
