Domaine Ponsot has practiced radical non-intervention since its founding in 1872: no new oak, no fining, no filtration, and since 1998, no added sulfur. This purist philosophy, maintained through the Laurent Ponsot era and now under Rose-Marie Ponsot's stewardship, produces Grand Cru Burgundy of startling transparency. Chapelle-Chambertin sits on the lower slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin's Grand Cru belt, just below the hallowed Chambertin Clos de Bèze, on stony limestone-clay soils that yield wines of both power and roundness. The 2006 vintage was a difficult year redeemed by a dry September: the Côte de Nuits fared better than the Côte de Beaune, producing aromatic, mid-weight Pinot Noir with fine tannin structure. This Chapelle shows smoke, leather, ripe plum, and high-toned red fruit—richly meaty yet bright and buoyant. Now fully evolved and drinking in its sweet spot.

Professional Reviews

"A restrained and slightly somber nose introduces cool and refined flavors that are rich and extremely earthy, indeed more so than usual with good mid-palate density and fine precision on the delicious, textured and wonderfully long finish where I really like the depth this offers. This seems to have lost any sense of hail-induced dryness and has become quite a serious Chapelle with ample backend minerality."

"Deep, saturated ruby-red. Superripe, slightly high-toned aromas of wild blackberry, black cherry and smoke. This, too, is a sweet, superripe fruit bomb, albeit in a rather powerful style and with a firm edge. Ponsot say it's the wine's tannins that give the impression of volatile acidity. Extremely rich for 2006: it will be interesting to follow this." -Stephen Tanzer

"The energy and lift here should persist in bottle for at least a decade, I predict, and are especially remarkable when one remembers that Ponsot eschews sulfur. Ponsot's 2006 Chapelle-Chambertin – his last-bottled wine of the vintage, and which I last tasted from its four barrels – offers smoke, leather, ripe plum, and high-toned maraschino in the nose, leading to a richly-fruited as well as richly meaty, yet bright and buoyant palate that proves transparent to mineral and animal nuances as well as prodigiously persistent. The ample tannins here are refined and deftly woven into the wine's fabric. This should be a superb candidate for 12-15 years fascinating evolution, though one that should already deliver enormous pleasure and intrigue as soon as it recovers from bottling." -David Schildknecht

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
