The village itself takes its name from this vineyard, established by monks of the collegiate church of Saint-Denis de Vergy in the eleventh century. At roughly six and a half hectares, it is significantly smaller than neighboring Clos de la Roche, and the terroir differs meaningfully: pebble-free brown limestone soil with higher clay content that retains more water, producing wines of greater aromatic complexity and perfume over sheer power.
