If Clos de la Roche is the Beethoven of Morey-Saint-Denis—powerful, serious, and commanding—then Clos Saint-Denis is its Mozart: delicate, nuanced, and finely tuned. The village itself takes its name from this vineyard, established by monks of the collegiate church of Saint-Denis de Vergy in the eleventh century. At roughly six and a half hectares, it is significantly smaller than neighboring Clos de la Roche, and the terroir differs meaningfully: pebble-free brown limestone soil with higher clay content that retains more water, producing wines of greater aromatic complexity and perfume over sheer power. Jadot brings the same Grand Cru expertise here as it does across its remarkable Côte de Nuits portfolio. The legendary 2005 vintage adds remarkable concentration and structure to the wine's natural elegance, with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity supporting a core of dark cherry, violet, and earthy spice. A wine of profound finesse, now in its prime with continued evolution ahead.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 96
"A wonderfully refined and distinctly floral nose with hints of wood spice and powerfully concentrated and ripe fruit marries with intense, precise and serious big-bodied flavors that retain the tender side of a fine Clos St. Denis yet it cedes nothing in terms of power to the Clos de la Roche. There is another dimension here and this is a knockout."

"Full red-ruby. Musky smoke and chocolate on the reticent nose. Sweet, silky and surprisingly pliant for a Jadot wine; the flavors of iron and faded flowers are classic to the vineyard but lack the definition and grip of the best Jadot '05s. This fairly rich wine finishes with excellent length but seems quite shut down today." -Stephen Tanzer

"Cherry, raspberry and resin also dominate the nose of the 2005 Clos St.-Denis, with almond and cherry pit notes emerging with air. Rich but clear in the mouth, this displays formidable tannins, yet at the same time an emerging creaminess. Pure fresh fruit allied to low-toned smoky, stony notes inform one of the longest finishes of any of Jadot’s wines. This surely has more than a decade of aging potential during which it can be expected to pick up further complexities and nuances, though here, too, a good bet seems to be that it will harden in the short run." -David Schildknecht

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
