Domaine Robert Chevillon traces to the late 1800s when Symphorien Chevillon began selling fruit to négociants. In 1946, Robert became the first family member to bottle wines rather than sell fruit, growing the estate from 3 to 14 hectares and elevating it to legendary status before retiring in 2003. Denis and Bertrand Chevillon (fifth generation) now produce "hearty, characterful wines that stand the test of time." They cultivate eight Premier Cru vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, including Les Vaucrains—one of the appellation's two finest climats, known for structured, long-lived wines with exceptional aging potential. The 2013 vintage was cool and complicated, producing light to medium-bodied wines with prominent acidity—not typical Nuits power. Yet Chevillon's 2013 Vaucrains is "potentially great": pure, full-bodied, tightly-knit, with plums, black cherries, cocoa, herbs, ripe firm tannins, and vibrant, balanced finish. Drinking window 2025-2075. An archetypal expression from challenging conditions.

"Here too there is enough wood to notice on the notably ripe and fresh aromas of black cherry, plum, pungent earth and abundant sauvage scents. The big, rich and full-bodied flavors possess an overt muscularity along with plenty of power on the extract-rich, intense and very firmly structured finale. As it always is this is rustic and austere and will need a minimum of 10 years to arrive at its peak but 15 will be better. The domaine almost never misses with this wine and the 2013 is potentially great."

"Deep, bright red. Brooding aromas of black fruits, bitter chocolate and menthol hint at superripeness. Less fruity and floral than the Saint-Georges and Cailles but fatter, sweeter and larger-scaled, boastig considerable power to the raspberry, earth and chocolate flavors. Saline, dense, classically dry wine with rich tannins that saturate the entire palate. This appears to need several more months of élevage." -Stephen Tanzer

"Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains has a dusky bouquet with herbaceous red berry fruit, hints of stewed black tea and later a little orange blossom -- all quite mercurial in the glass. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite dense with good backbone, perhaps undergoing a slightly longer maceration in the winery than its peers, though retaining sufficient freshness and delineation on the typically succulent finish. Tasted September 2016." -Neal Martin
