Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"Müllen acknowledged the presence of botrytis here but insisted there was “not much.” Despite that, I detect more fresh fruit character here than in the corresponding Spätlese. Concentrated fresh white peach is complemented by the piquancy of its pits, and fresh lime and pineapple add to the generous juiciness displayed on a nonetheless glycerol-rich palate lightly slicked with quince jelly. The finish, while prominently sweet, remains stimulatingly lively as well as mouthwateringly salt-tinged and transparent to stony underpinnings." -David Schildknecht

"The 2017 Trarbacher Hühnerberg Riesling Auslese is sourced from vines that have century-old genetics but were planted in 2005, what Martin Müllen calls his Jungfeld (young field). It opens to a dark, smoky and stony bouquet with aromas of perfectly ripe yet fine yellow stone fruit intertwined with crunchy flinty notes. On the palate, this is a sweet, lush, precise, piquant and enormously salty Auslese with red-skinned apple notes as well as stunning purity and finesse. The finish is delicately salty, densely woven and highly stimulating. This is a fabulous Auslese with great finesse, and it's highly digestible. A great and promising Auslese that any lover of Riesling shouldn't pass over. Tasted in March 2019." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
