What is this wine?
Clos du Rouge Gorge is the domaine of Cyril Fhal, one of the most respected natural winemakers in Roussillon. Farming biodynamically on schist and gneiss soils near Latour-de-France, Fhal works with old-vine Grenache and other traditional Catalan varieties. Jeunes Vignes (“young vines”) is his most approachable cuvée, made from younger Grenache plantings and vinified with native yeasts, no new oak, and minimal sulfur.
Why get this wine?
Cyril Fhal’s wines are cult favorites, known for their purity, finesse, and sense of place. While his old-vine bottlings are rare and collectible, Jeunes Vignes offers a way into his style at a more accessible price point. It’s a vibrant, soulful red that captures the essence of natural Roussillon winemaking.
What does this wine taste like?
Medium-bodied and lifted, with bright red cherry, strawberry, and plum, accented by herbs, pepper, and a stony, mineral edge. Silky tannins and fresh acidity make it lively and precise rather than heavy.
When should you drink this wine?
Best young, 2024–2028, for its freshness and energy. Enjoy slightly chilled with charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled vegetables, or Mediterranean fare.
