The Fleurie comes from La Madone, the steep granite hill crowned by the chapel that gives the cru its skyline - hard ground to work and some of the best in the appellation. Joseph Chamonard was fermenting whole clusters with wild yeast and aging in old foudre while the rest of Beaujolais was chaptalizing and sulfuring with abandon, a natural-wine pioneer before the term existed; after his death the domaine passed to his daughter Genevieve and her husband Jean-Claude Chanudet, whose semi-carbonic wines are as close to Jules Chauvet's original intent as anyone's. Their daughter Jeanne runs the 5.5 hectares of certified organic Gamay today. The house style is transparent and savory rather than fruity and loud, and it ages: older vintages of Chamonard have proved over and over that cru Beaujolais belongs in a cellar. Serve it at cellar temperature, now or over the next several years.

More about Domaine Chamonard

One of the original natural wine pioneers in Beaujolais, Jean-Claude Chanudet took over the 18th-century estate in 1989 and transformed it. He's the "enfant terrible" of the region, working small patches of Morgon and legendary Fleurie vines on an outcrop called La Madone. These wines taste like they were made by someone who trusted his vines more than anyone else's opinions.
