Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot is one of those small Burgundy estates that flew under the radar for years — selling fruit to négociants right up until 2009/2010 — before quietly becoming one of the more talked-about names on the Côte de Nuits. Based in Flagey-Échezeaux, the domaine farms around nine hectares spread across six different grand crus (Grands Échezeaux, Échezeaux, Clos de Vougeot, Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Charmes-Chambertin) plus a handful of village sites. Winemaker Thomas Colladot, on board since 2010 and a close friend of Sébastien Cathiard, works in a transparent, terroir-driven style — long cold soaks, gentle extraction, nothing showy. This village Morey-Saint-Denis comes from 2017, a generous, classically proportioned Côte de Nuits vintage that ripened fully without losing its freshness, and it shows the house signature: dark cherry, raspberry, forest floor, and a fine-grained tannic frame. Nine years on, it is fully open for business, with no hurry about it at all.

"The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Village comes from four climats scattered across the appellation and sees one-third new oak. Compared to the Chambolle Village, there is more fullness of fruit on the nose, which offers red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, a little piquancy toward the finish and a bit of orange zest on the aftertaste. Excellent." —Neal Martin
