Traditional Jura white aged sous voile from third-generation vigneron Nicole Deriaux, whose grandfather Victor Gros founded the domaine in 1920. From 9 hectares in L'Etoile on grey and blue marl soils rich in limestone. A field blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Savagnin undergoes extended aging: one year in oak foudres, then two more years in barrel under the naturally occurring yeast veil (flor). Total élevage of 30-36 months. Hand-harvested, vinified in cellars beneath the family home. Not produced every vintage.

More about Domaine de Montbourgeau

Domaine de Montbourgeau was founded a century ago, in the small Jura town of L’Etoile — the star — thus named because of the prodigious amount of star-shaped fossils in the soils, formed when ancient seas dried up.

Over the decades, they’ve become known for their white wines; like the best in the region, they are complex, saline, and (mostly) oxidative, with waxy yellow fruit and tons of minerality. They mostly grow Chardonnay, with a bit of Savagnin thrown in, as well as a smattering of red grapes.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

The finesse of the regular cuvée of L’Etoile plays counterpoint to this cuvée, “En Banode” which is a field blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin from a single vineyard source. Not produced every vintage, the “En Banode” is more full-bodied and rustic than the regular L’Etoile bottling and it reflects the special soil characteristics (the grey and blue marne) that are best for planting the finicky Savagnin grape. The “En Banode” bottling occurs after 30 to 36 months of élevage.
