White wine from the Clos de la Maréchale is one of Burgundy's most intriguing rarities—a tiny production of Chardonnay from the Côte d'Or's largest monopole vineyard, a site overwhelmingly devoted to Pinot Noir. The Mugnier family has owned this nearly ten-hectare walled vineyard since the domaine's founding in 1863, though it was leased to Faiveley for fifty-three years until Frédéric Mugnier recovered it in 2003. The white vines occupy a small corner of the clos where limestone and clay with oolitic pebbles create ideal conditions for Chardonnay of unusual minerality and power. Frédéric ferments with ambient yeasts in stainless steel, ages twelve months on fine lees in used oak, and bottles in January to preserve freshness. The result is a white with pronounced mineral structure and complex aromas combining pear, exotic fruit, and white flowers—a wine that needs five to ten years to fully reveal itself, developing iris and lilac notes over time. The 2023 shows the vintage's characteristic richness balanced by a taut, precise finish.

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
everything you need to know about Bourgogne is just a click away!
