A masterwork from Domenico Clerico, one of Barolo's most respected modernist voices. Ciabot Mentin, from the celebrated Ginestra hillside in Monforte d'Alba, delivers layers of sweet spices, menthol, violets, and dark fruit on a powerful, sculpted frame. Now nearly twenty years old, the massive tannins have integrated beautifully, revealing underlying architecture of tar, smoke, and licorice. A wine that rewards patience and will continue evolving gracefully.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"Good deep, saturated red with ruby tones. Lovely perfume of black cherry, plum, soy sauce, cinnamon and flowers; reticent but deep. A silky, intense midweight that's considerably richer than the Pajana. The highly aromatic red fruit flavors really blossomed in the glass with aeration. Finishes round, lush and broad, with harmonious acids and tannins and lingering perfume. This one has the mid-palate material to support its tannins. Clerico's '05 are wonderfully elegant wines." —Stephen Tanzer

Jancis Robinson

18.5 points

"Dark crimson. Very serious and high toned. Thick with vegetation scents. Looks very exciting with a hint of rose petal."

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Perfumed and aromatic, with fresh ripe strawberry and toasty oak. Full-bodied, with focused, chewy tannins and loads of wood and jammy fruit. Powerful."

More about Domenico Clerico

Since 1976, Domenico Clerico has been pulling Barolo from the steep slopes around Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. His four legendary crus—Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, Mosconi—sit on limestone soils that demand time and respect. At 21 hectares producing 110,000 bottles yearly, Clerico remains one of Piedmont's most respected voices. These are elegant Barolos, the way serious collectors understand them—structured, age-worthy, built to last decades.
