Flavio Roddolo is one of Piedmont's great under-the-radar traditionalists, a grower whose idiosyncratic, slow-aged wines we've championed for years. His Dolcetto d'Alba is not the cheerful early-drinker the grape usually delivers; Roddolo holds his wines back and they age far longer than almost anyone else's Dolcetto. This 2011, from a warm vintage, has had over a decade to settle, and it's drinking in a savory, mature register most people never get to see from this grape. A genuine curiosity for Piedmont lovers, and ready right now.

More about Flavio Roddolo

Flavio Roddolo is a legend in Monforte d'Alba, one of the last remaining truly genuine winemakers in Piedmont. His six hectares haven't been chemically treated in 40 years. He uses only indigenous yeasts, doesn't clarify or filter, and ages in cement and old oak. He bottles tiny quantities only when he feels they're ready. The world is watching to see what happens next.

Tasting Profile

A mature, savory Dolcetto well beyond its usual fruity youth: dried dark fruit, earth and a touch of herb, with softened tannins. Round and ready.
