Gatinois, Champagne Brut Tradition (Base 2022), NV

Aÿ in a glass — and that means Pinot Noir at full muscle. The Gatinois family has worked Grand Cru vineyards in this historic village since the 1600s, and twelfth-generation Louis Cheval-Gatinois continues to sell a sizable share of the harvest to neighbor Bollinger before bottling the rest under his own label. The Brut Tradition is the family's calling card: a base of the warm 2022 vintage, 80% Pinot Noir from estate parcels in Aÿ rounded out by 20% Chardonnay, aged a minimum of two years on the lees. Expect the broad-shouldered, red-fruited, almost still-wine intensity that makes Aÿ Pinot the stuff growers and houses fight over. Serious grower Champagne at a price that still feels honest.

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, its heavy Pinot component immediately apparent in the wine's color. Dried cherry, mint, white pepper and dried flowers all race across the palate. Bright and vibrant, with fine balance, the Brut Rosé is an absolute delight. It's not an obvious Champagne, but subtlety is an asset. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: September 2024; multiple disgorgements throughout the year." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Spice box and rose petal notes waft through flavors of poached pear, toast, mandarin orange peel and honey in this lacy, balanced Champagne, backed by well-cut acidity. Offers a clean, chalk-tinged finish. Disgorged November 2017. Drink now through 2021."

More about Gatinois

Twelve generations on the hillsides of Aÿ—that's about 300 years of family history in this one place. Louis Gatinois (12th generation) is a geologist who took over in 2010 and started bottling more for his own label instead of selling everything to the big houses. Only 3,300 cases a year. Small, serious, old-soul Champagne.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for the table — roast chicken with herbs, pork rillettes, mushroom tart, a bowl of olives and good cheese, or simply jamón. Aÿ Pinot has enough red-fruit weight to handle duck breast or a charcuterie board with confidence.

Tasting Profile

Pinot-driven and richly textured. Red apple, ripe strawberry, brioche, toasted almond, a flicker of orange peel. Fine, persistent bead; chalky Grand Cru spine; long, savory finish with the hallmark Aÿ depth and roundness.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
