In the Saar, where Riesling finds some of its most ethereal expressions, Stefan Müller is among the brightest stars of the new generation. His 2023 Spätlese from the Euchariusberg vineyard, sourced from vines planted in 1944, is a masterclass in balance—light as a feather, yet humming with tension and quiet power.

Euchariusberg is a historic site, steep and slate-rich, with an ideal southeast exposure that gives ripeness without weight. From old, ungrafted vines, Müller draws fruit of rare concentration and nuance. The Spätlese style here isn’t about opulence—it’s about translucence. There’s ripe citrus, orchard blossoms, and a shimmer of tropical fruit, but it floats on Saar’s signature acidity, finishing clean, salty, and lifted.

What makes this bottling truly special is how it captures time. You taste the depth of old vines, the clarity of a precise vintage, and the touch of a winemaker who values restraint over flourish. The “Alte Reben 1944” is labeled as Spätlese, but in texture and balance it feels almost Feinherb—just a whisper of sweetness, perfectly integrated.

It’s a wine that will age effortlessly for decades, but it’s also absurdly delicious right now. Pair with smoked trout, Thai cuisine, or drink it solo and let it unfold in the glass.

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
