The 2020 Jérôme Chezeaux Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a magnificent Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most esteemed grand cru vineyards. Jérôme Chezeaux, a producer celebrated for his understated yet meticulous approach, crafts wines that emphasize purity, balance, and the true expression of their terroir. Clos de Vougeot, one of Burgundy’s most historic and revered grand crus, is known for producing powerful yet refined wines, and this vintage captures the vineyard’s character with precision.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby hue with garnet highlights. The nose is elegant and complex, offering aromas of ripe black cherries, red currants, and plums, intertwined with notes of rose petals, earth, and warm spices. Subtle nuances of cedar and a touch of licorice reflect the influence of fine oak aging. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with velvety tannins providing a refined framework for its concentrated fruit core. Flavors of dark berries and red fruits are complemented by savory undertones, a hint of black tea, and a fine mineral edge, leading to a long, layered finish.

The 2020 vintage, marked by warm weather and optimal ripening conditions, imparts a lush and approachable character to this wine while preserving its hallmark freshness and vibrancy. It pairs beautifully with roasted game, duck breast, or a classic beef bourguignon. While accessible now for its ripe fruit and polished tannins, this Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has the depth and structure to evolve over the next 15–20 years, rewarding patience with additional complexity and nuance. Jérôme Chezeaux’s interpretation of Clos de Vougeot is a stunning example of both the vineyard’s grandeur and the domaine’s quiet mastery.

Domaine Jerome Chezeaux has been working with super importer Neil Rosenthal for 25 years. The Chezeaux family make a full range of wines from 11 + hectares of old vines in the Cote de Nuits. We are lucky that these fine vineyards remain in their capable hands. The wines are very pure and represent great value.

His daughter Lyse has joined him and like most modern young Burgundy growers she has completed a series of international internships. She will carry on the family tradition and bring fresh ideas. A new generation is reinvigorating the Cote d'Or. Many young women are contributing to this renaissance in Burgundy.

Traditionally made, hand harvested, indigenous yeasts and bottled unfiltered after a 18 to 24 month elevage. A maximum of 30% new oak is used, none on the Bourgogne rouge. The wines have an understated elegance, they are fresh and precise.

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

Chezeaux owns a 0.17-hectare sliver of this outsized grand cru, in the prime sector just above and next to the castle. From these old vines, Jérôme produces a wine that does justice to the immense power and complexity this site is capable of at its best. Rivetingly wild, gamy, and structured, it presents a forceful, iron-dominated mineral core flanked by dark fruit and shot through with muscular tannins. Always the most impenetrable wine in the cellar in its youth, it demands significant cellaring but pays enormous dividends in time.
