Johannes Hirsch works exclusively with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Kamptal, farming biodynamically since the early 2000s. This 2016 Gaisberg Riesling—now a decade old—comes from the renowned Gaisberg site in Zöbing, with its siliceous brown earth and grit-rich soils that create distinctive minerality. The ÖTW (Austrian Traditional Wine) classification reflects Hirsch's commitment to authentic terroir expression. At 10 years, this wine shows developed complexity: honeyed notes emerging beneath the mineral structure, with bright acidity still intact. Ready to drink now or hold another 5+ years as secondary flavors deepen. Hirsch's screw-cap closure (pioneered for top wines in 2003) has preserved the wine beautifully.

Antonio Galloni

"Peach, orange, lime, oregano, peony, rowan and carnation combine for a pungent and (given that it’s Gaisberg we’re talking about) unexpectedly floral nose. The midpalate is glossy and richly fruited yet delightfully buoyant and brightly juicy, with the effusive array of floral elements persisting as inner-mouth perfume. Zesty citrus peel and piquant apricot kernel lend stimulating counterpoint to an impressively sustained finish suffused with mouthwatering salinity." —David Schildknecht

"Hirsch's 2016 Kamptal Riesling Gaisberg 1ÖTW offers a beautifully clear, fine and concentrated white stone fruit aroma intertwined with flinty flavors. On the palate, the wine is pure, salty and very intense but well structured and vital—a true terroir wine with tension, grip and enormous length. I'd recommend keeping this tonic Riesling for at least three or four years. Tasted as a sample at the end of June 2017, two weeks before bottling." —Stephan Reinhardt

"A flinty touch of reduction plays among the zesty, aromatic orange notes on the nose. The palate is fluid and light, with an earthy background but ultimately lemon flavors set the tone on the slight, light body. The finish is dry and full of citrus notes." —Anne Krebiehl MW
