A Grand Cru with a decade-plus of bottle age, ready to go. Brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert run this small Gevrey-Chambertin domaine in the traditional Côte de Nuits style — small yields, careful élevage, no flash. Charmes-Chambertin is the most accessible and perfumed of Gevrey's Grands Crus, a wine of supple red fruit and silken texture rather than the structural muscle of a Mazis or Chambertin itself. 2013 was a small, cool vintage that produced delicate, transparent Burgundies — and twelve years on, this is exactly where you want a 2013 Grand Cru to be: aromatically expressive, the structure integrated, fruit still intact, drinking right in the meat of its window.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Slightly high-toned aromas of black raspberry, currant, rocks and licorice pastille, plus a sexy note of smoky oak. The fattest and sweetest of this 2013 collection, already showing a lot of early personality to its dark fruit and licorice flavors. Turns tougher and stonier on the rather powerful, tannic back end. I can certainly envision this wine shutting down in the bottle." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Classic Burgundy fare. Roast duck with cherries, coq au vin, squab with mushrooms, a rare côte de boeuf, or a wedge of Époisses at the end of the meal. Truffle if you've got it.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and silken, with perfumed red cherry, rose petal, forest floor, and a whisper of game. Tannins resolved, acidity bright, finish elegant and lingering. Mature Grand Cru poise.
