What is this wine?
Cantine del Notaio’s “La Firma” Aglianico del Vulture 2012 is a flagship red from Basilicata in southern Italy, made entirely from Aglianico grapes grown on volcanic slopes around Mount Vulture. Founded by Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, the estate champions the age-old potential of this high-altitude terroir. La Firma—meaning “The Signature”—is sourced from older vines, fermented in small oak barrels, and aged for at least 12 months in barriques and tonneaux, followed by extended bottle aging before release.
Why get this wine?
A benchmark of southern Italian winemaking, La Firma shows how Aglianico can rival Barolo and Brunello in structure and complexity. The 2012 vintage, now beautifully mature, combines volcanic minerality with the dark fruit and spice that define the grape. It’s rich, elegant, and deeply expressive—a collectible wine offering outstanding value for its depth and ageworthiness.
What does this wine taste like?
Deep and complex, with aromas of blackberry, plum, tobacco, and licorice. The palate is full-bodied and layered, showing ripe black fruit, cocoa, and spice, framed by firm but velvety tannins and a long, savory finish with mineral lift.
When should you drink this wine?
Drinking beautifully now through 2032. Decant for one hour to open its aromas. Excellent with braised meats, game, or aged cheeses.
