La Mission Haut-Brion is the great rival and across-the-road neighbor of Haut-Brion itself, a Cru Classe of the Graves and one of the most storied estates in all of Bordeaux. And 2007 is the connoisseur's vintage to grab: a year given the cold shoulder on release that has aged into one of its quiet triumphs, with the wine drinking gorgeously now while top years remain locked away. The 2007 blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the gravel terroir of Pessac and Talence, just southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Expect the estate's signature smoky, gravelly, almost savory character, medium-bodied and finely structured. A mature, classified-growth Pessac-Leognan at its peak.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2007 La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the great successes of a vintage given the cold shoulder by consumers on initial release. It has an ebullient bouquet of vivid dark berry, warm gravel and undergrowth scents that are complex and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity, a precise structure and superb tension on the finish." —Neal Martin

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Offers berry and coffee bean aromas, with hints of mahogany. Full-bodied, with a lovely silky texture and a vanilla, berry and chocolate aftertaste. Hard not to drink now. There's lots at the finish. Even a little chewy. Best after 2013."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"A smooth, velvet textured wine, piled high with sweet, ripe flavors. There is fine, opulent concentration here, impressive density, and a solid, tannic core. While it is not as powerful as some vintages from this estate, it certainly suggests the ability to age 5–6 years and more." —Roger Voss

More about La Mission Haut Brion

Often called Bordeaux's unequivocal Sixth First Growth, La Mission Haut-Brion sits across the road from its famous neighbor, both now under Domaine Clarence Dillon. These are serious Graves—complex, age-worthy, and genuinely worth seeking out if you're tired of the same overpriced names.
