Contrade di Taurasi – Cantine Lonardo is a small, family-run estate that’s become one of the most compelling voices in Taurasi. The “Coste” bottling comes from high-elevation vineyards planted on volcanic soils, all farmed with minimal intervention. Fermentation with native yeasts and aging in large Slavonian oak casks allow the wine to fully express its origin.

The 2018 vintage delivers serious depth: black cherry, plum skin, dried oregano, and volcanic earth. The tannins are firm but refined, framing the wine without overwhelming it, and the acidity is vibrant, keeping all that richness in check. There’s a brooding beauty here—this isn’t a wine that flatters early, but one that rewards time and attention.

Ideal with braised meats, aged cheeses, or cellared for 10–15 years. For lovers of Barolo, Etna Rosso, or mountain reds with structure and soul, Lonardo’s Taurasi “Coste” 2018 is a powerful, age-worthy standout from one of Italy’s most underrated regions.

"The 2018 Taurasi Coste is pure elegance, delicate and floral in the glass, impressing with a lifted bouquet of violets, minty herbs and black currants. It's finessed and graceful, with cooling minerality and fresh acidity guiding its pretty wild berry fruits. Grippy tannins emerge toward the close as the 2018 folds in upon itself, youthfully structured and poised, with a pleasantly chewy sensation that lingers. Have patience with this cool and classic Taurasi." —Vinous

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied red with dark cherry and spice aromas, powerful tannins, structured acidity, complex finish with mineral notes.

Cantine Lonardo is one of those domaines that have been growing grapes—always organically—for generations, but only started bottling in recent times (1998). They continue to work organically and use traditional practices in the winery. To lovers of traditional Barolo, this will sound familiar: a very long maceration (beyond two months!), aging strictly in large neutral barrels, and wines of depth, power, structure, and soulfulness. The grapes are picked late and yet the alcohols are modest, resulting in wonderfully balanced wines.
