The 2016 Louis Roederer Brut Champagne is an exquisite expression of the vintage, combining the house’s hallmark elegance and precision with the richness of a warm growing season. Louis Roederer, one of Champagne’s most prestigious producers, is renowned for crafting wines of depth and finesse, drawing on a legacy of meticulous viticulture and winemaking. This vintage Brut is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from the estate’s prized vineyards, showcasing a harmonious balance of fruit, minerality, and complexity.

In the glass, the wine reveals a brilliant golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of crisp green apple, ripe pear, and lemon zest, interwoven with floral notes of white blossoms and hints of toasted brioche, hazelnut, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a creamy texture supported by vibrant acidity. Flavors of citrus, orchard fruits, and a touch of honey are complemented by a chalky minerality, leading to a long, refined finish with lingering notes of saline and toasted almond.

The 2016 vintage, characterized by a cooler start followed by a warm and sunny ripening period, lends this Champagne a unique combination of ripe fruit and fresh acidity. It pairs beautifully with oysters, lobster, or sushi, as well as creamy cheeses or lightly roasted poultry. While approachable now for its vibrant fruit and elegant structure, this vintage Brut also has the potential to evolve gracefully over the next 8–10 years, gaining further complexity and nuance.

Louis Roederer’s 2016 Brut Champagne is a superb example of vintage Champagne at its finest, offering a seamless blend of richness, balance, and sophistication that will delight enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Louis Roederer is one of the largest family-owned and run Champagne houses—and one of the oldest. Because they’ve been purchasing land for nearly 250 years, they’ve amassed valuable land all over Champagne; they are able to pick and choose which parcel goes into which cuvée, taking into account the specifics of each plot.

Founded in 1776, by the 19th century Louis Roederer was named the official wine supplier to the Russian court, by Tsar Nicholas II. They were among the first major Champagne houses to produce a tête de cuvée—the famed Cristal was first released in 1945.

These days, Roederer is acclaimed for their rigorous standards in farming—with nearly a third of their 590 acres farmed biodynamically, they are the largest biodynamic grower in Champagne. Nearly every cuvée they produce is made from estate fruit; the one exception is the Brut Premier, which includes roughly 20% bought fruit, purchased from farmers with whom they have long term contracts.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Vintage is terrific. Rich, creamy and super-expressive, the 2016 is an absolute delight. All this fruit is from Roederer’s La Montagne estate, with Pinot Noir very much driving the blend. That comes through in a Champagne of notable textural resonance and breadth that grows with air. Hints of apricot, plum, spice and dried flowers caress the palate, all framed by a discreet touch of oak and an extra kick of texture from a few lots (5%) that underwent malolactic fermentation. This is a superb edition of the Vintage. The blend is 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay. Here, the richness of the warm summer very much comes through." -Vinous

"A seamless Champagne, deftly knitting flavors of crushed black raspberry, tangerine peel, chalk and Marcona almond with the fine china–like acidity and satiny mousse. The graceful balance gives this an effortless feel, but there's intensity and drive to this well-tailored version. Long and fragrant on the finish, with hints of ground ginger, blood orange zest and mineral. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay."

"Produced from the first vineyard acquired by Roederer in 1841, this Champagne shows the beginnings of maturity as well as ripe, fresh apple fruit flavors. An aroma of toast mingled with kiwi fruits gives a finely balanced wine now ready to drink."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
