What is this wine?
Château de Pitray is a historic Right Bank estate, owned by the same family for over 600 years. Located in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, just east of Saint-Émilion, its vineyards lie on clay-limestone soils similar to its famous neighbor. The blend is dominated by Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, classically aged in oak to highlight structure and depth. The 2019 vintage was excellent across Bordeaux, yielding wines with ripe fruit, balance, and aging potential.
Why get this wine?
Castillon is one of Bordeaux’s top value appellations, offering Saint-Émilion character without the price tag. Château de Pitray is widely regarded as one of the best producers in the area, consistently punching above its weight. The 2019 shows the richness of the vintage with the estate’s trademark elegance—serious Bordeaux at an everyday price.
What does this wine taste like?
Medium to full-bodied, with ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis layered with cedar, spice, and graphite. Smooth tannins and bright acidity bring balance and length.
When should you drink this wine?
Drinking beautifully now, but it can age through 2029. Ideal with roast chicken, pork, lamb, or hearty pastas. A short decant enhances aromatics.
