From the hills of Radda, Monteraponi's 2023 Chianti Classico captures the purity and class of this challenging vintage. Ninety-five percent organically farmed Sangiovese with 5% Canaiolo, fermented in cement for three weeks, then aged 16 months in large oak without fining or filtration. Black cherry, cedar, liquorice, tobacco, menthol, and truffle—layered and savory with the structure and elegance Chianti Classico demands.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2023 Chianti Classico is endowed with exceptional class and purity, despite the challenges of the growing season. Black cherry, cedar, liquorice, spice, tobacco and menthol fill out the layers effortlessly. All this needs is a bit of time to soften the contours. The 2023 spent 16 months in cask." —Antonio Galloni

"The organic Monteraponi 2023 Chianti Classico reflects the character of the vintage with ripe fruit, dark cherry and plum. There is a point of softness on the palate, and you taste the raw pulpy nature of Sangiovese's skins and grapes. The finish is soft and accessible, with sweet earthiness too." —Monica Larner

Kerin O'Keefe

94 points

"The Monteraponi 2023 Chianti Classico is fragrant and savory, with great flavors of ripe Morello cherry, raspberry, bitter orange, truffle and star anise. Due the challenging vintage that created problems with downy mildew across Italy that in turn generated drastic reductions in yields, the estate made no single-vineyard wines in 2023 and all the best grapes went into this bottling, and it shows: While it’s a rounder, juicier version than previous years, it still has the estate’s hallmark of finesse and the village’s trademark saltiness. Drink through 2033." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Monteraponi

From single most exciting young estate to one of Chianti Classico's standout names. Monteraponi, a medieval village just outside Radda, is home to Michele Braganti's 12 hectares of vineyard on the southern slopes of the commune. He uses concrete for fermentation, big oak for aging, and biodynamic farming to pull bright red fruit and floral aromatics from sandy-calcareous soils. Proof that the Classico zone still has surprises.
