Le Pergole Torte 2020 is the flagship wine of Montevertine, a revered estate in Radda in Chianti that famously left the Chianti Classico DOCG in the 1980s to pursue its own uncompromising vision of pure Sangiovese expression. The fruit comes from the estate’s oldest vines, and the wine is made with native fermentations, long maceration, and aging in a mix of Slavonian and French oak.

The 2020 vintage offers a beautifully poised balance of red cherry, rose petal, wild herbs, and orange peel, with a fine-grained tannic structure and bright acidity. While approachable in youth for its perfume and purity, it will gain depth, earthiness, and savory detail over the next 15–30 years, especially in 6L format, which slows the aging process and enhances longevity.

Bottled by hand and rarely seen in this format, the 6-liter (imperial) bottling is perfect for cellar collectors, milestone celebrations, or serious Sangiovese lovers looking for the ultimate expression.

Pair with porchetta, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or truffle risotto, or decant hours in advance for a meditative solo experience.

"The 2020 Le Pergole Torte is a total stunner. Rich, sumptuous and layered, the 2020 possesses exceptional balance and class to burn. The 2020 is an opulent, racy and super-expressive wine with no hard edges and exceptional balance. Readers will find a super-classic Pergole Torte endowed with tremendous fruit purity. Dark-toned fruit, lavender, sage, graphite and spice build into a potent laced with a kiss of French oak and enough tannin to ensure fabulous development in the cellar." —Vinous

More about Montevertine

Pure expression of Radda terroir through an act of principle. When Sergio Manetti refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese blend, Montevertine had to leave the Chianti Classico consortium. But he also liberated himself from rules—and proved that one grape, farmed with passion, could represent a place more honestly than compromise wines. The result: a three-decade cult following and some of Tuscany's most elegant Sangiovese.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

The prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its élevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Tasting Profile

Dense and concentrated with blackberry, plum, and mineral notes. Full body with structured tannins and good acidity. Finish is long with persistent dark fruit.

You probably already know about Montevertine. It has been one Tuscany's brightest stars for decades, on the forefront of every movement that has made the region what it is today. They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. They have always sought to express their distinct Radda terroir, laying the foundation for today's growing interest in Chianti's varied crus (and especially in Radda!).
