One estate, one wine: Clos des Brusquières makes nothing but red Châteauneuf-du-Pape. There's no luxury cuvée, no special blend and no white, so all of the family's attention goes into a single bottling. Claude Courtil learned his winemaking from Henri Bonneau, the most stubbornly traditional of Châteauneuf's legends, and you can see it in how the house works: the vineyard is worked by hand, the vines are 40 to 100 years old, and the wine is bottled without heavy-handed fining or filtration. The Courtils have been vignerons for five generations. Claude inherited the estate from his father at just 18 and took charge in 1969. The name goes back to 1926, when his grandfather registered Clos des Brusquières after a parcel called Les Brusquières in the northwest of the appellation. It's a tiny address with no glossy extras, and that's the appeal. If you want your Châteauneuf honest rather than polished, this is the one to know.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic, traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape profile: ripe red and black cherry, raspberry and plum from old-vine Grenache, with Syrah adding darker fruit and a peppery edge, plus dried herbs, leather and spice. Typically full-bodied and warm, with supple but firm tannins and a long, savoury finish. Think a deeper, more serious Côtes du Rhône, honest rather than polished.
