Most single-vineyard Gaja gets bought young and drunk too soon. This 2004 Sorì San Lorenzo has already spent two decades in bottle, so the waiting is done. It's Nebbiolo from one of Gaja's named Barbaresco vineyards, and those single-site bottlings are part of why the name carries so much weight. Angelo Gaja took over from his father in 1970 and revolutionized Italian winemaking. A mature bottle from one of these sites shows you where all that ambition was headed. Stand it upright for a day before opening, decant it gently off any sediment, and give it time in the glass.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato (beef braised in red wine) with polenta; tajarin with shaved white truffle; roast veal shank; agnolotti del plin in a roasting-juice sauce; aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barbaresco take on Nebbiolo: red cherry, violet and dried flowers, with savoury tar, leather and earthy spice that typically deepen with bottle age. Gaja's single-vineyard style is usually full and polished, with French oak framing firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, then a long, dry finish.
