Even very casual consumers of Burgundy have likely heard of Domaine Dujac, considered one of the very best producers in Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a rather astounding fact given that the Domaine is only 50 years old, a blink in the eye given the region's winemaking history.

When Jacques Seysses purchased the estate of Marcel Graillet in 1967, it was in disrepair and had been selling fruit off in bulk for some years. In less then a decade he had invested heavily in the property and found customers for his domaine bottled wines. The Dujac name begin to be seen at top restaurants in France and beyond.

Fast forward 20 years and you have Jacques' sons, Alec and Jeremy, taking over the reigns of the now expanded Domaine, with holdings in Gevrey, Chambolle, Vosne, Nuits and Puligny. Today Jeremy and his wife Diana Snowden (herself from a prominent wine-making family in Napa) are largely responsible for the operations.

The winemaking has evolved. Jacques was famous for using 100% whole clusters and 100% new oak. Jeremy and Diana are the first to tell you that adaptation is key. The climate is changing dramatically in Burgundy, and every vintage presents new challenges. Stem use is between 20% and 100%, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. Same goes for oak use. On a visit there last spring Jeremy was excited to show us his concrete egg tanks that were aging the Puligny-Montrachets.

All of this is to say that this now storied Domaine is in very good hands as it heads into the future.

"From a 1.16 ha parcel. A cool, spicy and airy nose blends notes of fresh dark cherry, crushed fennel, rose petal and a whiff of lavender. On the palate the middleweight flavors could pass for a classic Chambolle as they're lacy and refined while displaying solid power on the beautifully complex, long and impeccably well-balanced finale. Lovely juice with excellent development potentialF"

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is one of Dujac's strongest cards, and in this vintage, there's no change there. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich red fruit, subtle iris flower scents and a hint of sous-bois. It has more energy than an over-excited puppy. The palate is medium-bodied with a well-knit opening, harmonious with white pepper and clove-infused black fruit. It has fine backbone, precise and edgy on the finish that lingers long in the mouth. Excellent." -Vinous

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes opens in the glass with aromas of orange zest, peonies and spices complemented by deep bass notes of plum and cherry. Medium to full-bodied, ample and unctuous, with a broad attack and a rich, layered mid-palate, it concludes with a long, saline finish. Harvest at Domaine Dujac began on August 29. At the time, Jeremy Seysses thought of the vintage as potentially reminiscent of 2018—tasting the wines this winter, he feels that they're more delicate, while also admitting that he was even more cautious about extraction in 2022. Whatever the apposite analogy, the result is clear: a superb portfolio of beautifully balanced wines that unite charm and density. Readers, of course, will be familiar with the outlines of the Dujac approach to producing red Burgundy: organic farming, fermentation with a predominance of whole clusters and élevage in barrels largely sourced from Tonnellerie Rémond. None of that seems to have changed in 2022, despite a new winery where stainless steel vats have replaced concrete. The wines retain, nay exalt in, their distinctive identity."

"The Gevrey Combottes is once again a standout in the Dujac lineup. A discreet and subtle wine, the fruit ripeness is impressive, but it starts slightly closed and really opens on the palate with aromas of pomegranate, kirsch, and violets. The structure is impressive, with tannin that is at once firm but also very fine-grained and elegant. The density is rewarding, and the finish lingers on the palate. The grapes are from their 1.16-hectare site and are fermented as mostly whole clusters before ageing in cask."

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
