Fratelli Alessandria is one of the benchmark producers in Verduno, a village known for making some of the most graceful, aromatic Barolos. Their Comune di Verduno bottling blends fruit from several top sites, giving a pure snapshot of the village’s signature style—elegant, expressive, and beautifully balanced. The 2020 vintage, with its combination of ripeness and freshness, makes this especially vibrant and approachable.

Wild strawberry, red cherry, and blood orange jump out first, followed by dried roses, licorice, and a hint of spice. The tannins are firm but fine-grained, giving it structure without overwhelming the wine’s lifted, floral side. While delicious with a good decant now, this will age gracefully for 10–15 years. A perfect match for truffle dishes, roasted meats, or just a long, slow evening with a great bottle of Barolo.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their familly has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Wine Spectator

WS 93
"A rich red, with a mineral and structural underpinning to its cherry, plum, menthol, rose hip and earth flavors. Taut and well-delineated, this is driven by vibrant acidity. Though compact, the aftertaste echoes both the fruit and savory elements."

WE 94
"The wine strikes a harmonious blend of lifted red fruits and deep macerated black cherries, marrying high tones with rich bass notes. A savory embrace circles the fruit, maintaining balance, while fine tannins lay the groundwork for graceful aging. This is a wine poised for evolution, its intricate layers promising to unfold beautifully over time."

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

A tense and racy Barolo that offers plenty of red fruit, spices, dried citrus peel and hints of crushed stones and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, dense and structured on the palate with velvety tannins. I like the mineral backbone and lingering spicy finish.
