What is this wine?
Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is one of Barolo’s great traditional estates, with roots going back to the 19th century. Their most prized vineyard is Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto, considered one of Barolo’s grand crus. From a tiny parcel at its heart, planted with the rare Michét clone of Nebbiolo, they produce the legendary Ca d’Morissio Riserva. Made only in top vintages, it is released after extended cask and bottle aging. The 1995 was the inaugural vintage of this cuvée, making it a historic bottling.
Why get this wine?
Ca d’Morissio is produced in vanishingly small quantities and is among the most collectible and long-lived Barolos. The 1995 not only marks the first release of this flagship wine but also showcases Mascarello’s hallmark style: profound Nebbiolo of purity, structure, and terroir expression. With nearly 30 years of bottle age, this is a rare opportunity to experience a fully mature Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most iconic producers.
What does this wine taste like?
Evolved yet vibrant, with aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, leather, tobacco, and truffle. The palate is elegant and complex, showing silky tannins, savory depth, and a long, earthy finish.
When should you drink this wine?
This bottle is at peak maturity now but will hold gracefully for another decade. Ideal for a special occasion, paired with braised meats, aged cheeses, or simply enjoyed contemplatively on its own.
