“La Fauquette” is one of Michel Gahier’s most traditional and idiosyncratic wines: an oxidatively aged Melon à Queue Rouge, a rare, local strain of Chardonnay long prized in the Jura for its character and aging potential.

The 2019 is made in a sous voile style—aged under a thin layer of yeast (voile) in old barrels that are not topped up, allowing slow oxidation and the development of rich, savory, nutty flavors. This technique is similar to the method used for vin jaune, though the aging period is shorter and the wine is bottled earlier.

The result is a wine that’s golden in color, aromatic and intense, with notes of toasted walnut, curry spice, bruised orchard fruit, and saline minerality. It’s bone dry, with firm acidity and a slightly grippy, phenolic finish. Definitely a wine for lovers of traditional Jura styles or adventurous drinkers curious about oxidative white wines.

Best served slightly below room temperature and matched with hard cheeses, roasted poultry, or rich mushroom dishes.

Based in Montigny les Arsures, widely known as the home of Trousseau, the Gahier family has been in the Jura since 1525.

Sometimes known as the protegée of famed Jura producer Jacques Puffeney, it is clear after just a few exchanges that Michel Gahier was a singular winemaker in his own right. Throughout his 35+ vintages, Gahier's philosophy remains the same: nothing added, and nothing taken away. He harvests and vinifies all wines parcel by parcel. Each wine ultimately is derived exclusively from a single vineyard site. The white wines are layered and complex while his reds are fresh, mineral driven, and energetic.

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

Always the greatest of Michel’s white wines, “La Fauquette” (from soils of marne bleu) spends four years in 400-liter barrels without being topped up. Despite the marked influence of the voile, however, it is the most elegant of Gahier’s whites: viscerally salty and rich, but with the finesse of great Corton-Charlemagne. Called Melon, the vines are of the local variety of Chardonnay known as “Melon à Queue Rouge”, a white grape the skin color of which bleeds towards red as it approaches the stem.
