After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2008 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Heurtebise, Chartogne's 100% Chardonnay is another gorgeous, striking wine from this pedigreed vintage. Lemon oil, white flowers, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper race out of the glass. The style is taut, focused and crystalline, with a deeply saline finish that is incredibly inviting. The early signs of aromatic development suggest the 2008 might be especially long-lived, but it is absolutely gorgeous today. Dosage is 4 grams/liter." -Vinous

"Chartogne-Taillet’s 2008 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Heurtebise issues from the eponymous Chardonnay vineyard in Merfy and was vinified in steel tank and concrete egg. Juicy peach and lemon tinged with pungent green herbs and pronouncedly marked by their piquant pit and pip mingle with mouthwatering oyster liquor on a polished palate, then launch themselves into a finish of consummate reach, resonance and refreshment. This inevitably versatile cuvee offers outstanding value by Champagne standards and should be worth following for up to half a dozen years."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
