Meet Peter Lauer, one of Germany’s foremost Riesling producers, whose three Grosses Gewächs (GG) selections showcase the precision of Saar viticulture. GG represents Germany’s pinnacle of dry wine—hand-harvested, physiologically ripe fruit vinified bone-dry. Feils sits on one of the warmest sites in the Saarland, its south-facing riverside exposure yielding ethereal mint and herbal notes with distinctive minerality. The 2024 vintage was challenging—April frosts, fungal pressure, the smallest harvest in 50 years—but the wines focus on elegance and freshness with pronounced fruit.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2024 Riesling Biebelhausener Feils Grosses Gewächs No. 13 is from very steep, well-drained, gravelly soils that face south. It clearly benefited from the moisture of 2024. Lovely notes of pear and crushed yarrow charm on the nose, showing that this site was a winner in 2024. Its tender creaminess is enhanced by subtle oak and smoothness itself. This is a rounded, complete and serene Riesling." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Peter Lauer

The Saar's excellent, affordable rising star. Florian Lauer (fifth generation, admitted to the VDP in 2013) has made his family estate a reference point for serious German Riesling at prices that don't require a second mortgage. They farm organically, ferment native yeast, employ no fining agents, and release wines—especially the incredible value Barrel entries—that prove great terroir transcends pretension.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
