Georges Laval’s Cumières Brut Nature (base 2022) is sourced from organically farmed Premier Cru vineyards in the village of Cumières. The blend—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier—is fermented in neutral oak with native yeasts and aged 18 months on lees before disgorgement with zero dosage.

Precise and energetic, it shows citrus, chalk, and fine lees texture. A pure, vinous expression of Cumières terroir, crafted without compromise.

What are the great Italian whites? There are many promising categories. But an important one that is getting much attention these days is the traditional white grapes of Campania, including Fiano and Greco.

One of our favorite producers of these wines is Ciro Picariello. It's a domaine that specializes in white wines made from high-altitude vines, all native to Campania, grown in volcanic soils. Because of the high altitudes—up to 2,100 feet above sea level—it takes a long time for the grapes to get ripe, and they develop wonderful depth while preserving their natural acidities. With very minimal work in the cellar (natural fermentation, minimal sulfur), the pure essence of these grape varieties and their volcanic terroirs shines through in bottle.

How good are these wines? Very good! With fruit, minerality, verve, and that special sense of terroir, you can compare them without shame to the great whites of Burgundy, the Loire, or the Mosel.

"The NV (2022) Brut Nature Cumières is a super-classic wine from the village, as interpreted by Vincent Laval. Dried pear, spice, dried leaves and plum are some of the notes that open in the glass. Subtle and nuanced, with striking finesse, the Cumières is an absolute delight. There's terrific energy here, but this release is also a bit more open than most other editions, which makes this quite accessible, even in the early going. Floral top notes lift the finish nicely. Fermented and matured in oak, it opens from the glass with aromas of early-blooming white blossoms, pear and spices. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, vinous and fleshy, delivering an expansive entry and a generous core of ripe fruit. The acidity is both ripe but vibrant, while the mousse is pillowy, lending a refined texture.
