Mouzon-Leroux’s Champagne “L’Incandescent” Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut NV, with a 2019 base, is a bold and expressive rosé crafted exclusively from Pinot Noir. Using the saignée method, where the juice macerates briefly with the skins, this Champagne gains its vibrant color and depth of flavor. Mouzon-Leroux’s dedication to biodynamic viticulture in the Grand Cru village of Verzy in the Montagne de Reims brings out the rich character of the Pinot Noir and the terroir’s chalky minerality. The Extra Brut dosage accentuates the wine’s natural acidity and keeps the profile crisp and focused.

On the nose, “L’Incandescent” bursts with aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries, and pomegranate, complemented by floral hints and a touch of spice. The palate is layered and vibrant, featuring flavors of ripe red berries, blood orange, and a subtle earthiness, with a fine, creamy mousse that enhances its texture. The Extra Brut finish is precise and dry, leaving a lingering impression of chalk and a hint of salinity.

This Champagne pairs beautifully with dishes like duck, charcuterie, or grilled salmon, where its bold fruit profile and structure shine. The 2019 base imparts freshness and intensity, making “L’Incandescent” a captivating choice for those who appreciate a robust, terroir-driven rosé Champagne with depth and elegance.

More about this wine

Grapes | 100% Pinot Noir

Vineyards | Pinot Noir planted uniquely in the chalky eastern valley where Chardonnay dominates. One parcel in this sector was consistently affected by frost and since red varieties tend to be less sensitive, Sébastien’s grandfather and father replanted this parcel to Pinot Noir as a way to both mitigate the effects of frost and to have Pinot planted in chalk for the Rosé de Saignée.

Vinification | 19-hour maceration; indigenous yeast fermentation, full malo. Aged 8 months in inox; 30 months en tirage; zero dosage

Disgorgement: March 2023

Mouzon-Leroux is the only specialist we can think of from Verzy, one of the great Grand Crus of Montagne. This is pretty neat, because Verzy is a rare Grand Cru that actually points northeast, so it has very cool vineyards produces wines where mineral is far out in front of fruit. All of this is enhanced through organic and biodynamic farming, and a hands-off approach in the winery -- malos are allowed to occur naturally and virtually no sulphur is used. Mouzon-Leroux is one of the elite producers who can claim membership in the Special Club.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 92
"Disgorged in December 2019 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage, the NV Rosé de Saignée L’Incandescent derives exclusively from the 2016 vintage and saw 28 hours of maceration before pressing. Offering up inviting aromas of plums, raspberries, cinnamon, orange rind and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and vinous, with powdery phenolic structure, tangy acids and a fine-boned, elegant profile. This is a pretty but serious wine from Mouzon-Leroux that's well worth seeking out." -Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

WS 94
"Firm and fragrant, with an overtone of wild sage and thyme, this shows a lovely range of ripe black raspberry, mandarin orange peel, graphite, mineral and spice notes. There's real drive to this tightly meshed, mouthwatering Champagne, yet this is refined and creamy on the palate, with raw silky texture. Long, chalky finish."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
