Mouzon Leroux’s Champagne “L’Angélique” Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2017 is a refined and terroir-driven expression of Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Verzy in the Montagne de Reims. Known for their commitment to biodynamic practices, Mouzon Leroux emphasizes the natural character of the vineyard, allowing the chalky soils of Verzy to impart a distinct mineral quality to the wine. Vinified in oak barrels and bottled with minimal dosage, this Extra Brut cuvée highlights both the purity and depth of Chardonnay from a single vintage.

On the nose, “L’Angélique” opens with elegant aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and white flowers, complemented by hints of chalk, almond, and a touch of brioche. The palate is precise and lively, featuring flavors of citrus, crisp pear, and a subtle salinity that speaks to the chalk-rich terroir. The fine, creamy mousse enhances the wine’s texture, while the Extra Brut dosage keeps the finish clean, dry, and mineral-driven, with a lingering impression of freshness.

Ideal for pairing with oysters, sashimi, or light creamy dishes, “L’Angélique” Blanc de Blancs is a versatile choice for both celebratory and refined dining moments. The 2017 vintage imparts a balanced structure and vibrancy, making this Champagne an excellent option for enthusiasts seeking a pure, terroir-focused expression of Grand Cru Chardonnay.

Mouzon-Leroux is the only specialist we can think of from Verzy, one of the great Grand Crus of Montagne. This is pretty neat, because Verzy is a rare Grand Cru that actually points northeast, so it has very cool vineyards produces wines where mineral is far out in front of fruit. All of this is enhanced through organic and biodynamic farming, and a hands-off approach in the winery -- malos are allowed to occur naturally and virtually no sulphur is used. Mouzon-Leroux is one of the elite producers who can claim membership in the Special Club.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
