Mouzon Leroux’s Champagne “L’Ascendant” Solera Extra Brut NV, with a base of 2017, is a unique and expressive blend that uses a perpetual solera system, adding layers of complexity to each bottle. Crafted primarily from Pinot Noir and complemented by Chardonnay, this cuvée draws on biodynamically farmed grapes from the Grand Cru village of Verzy in the Montagne de Reims. The solera method, combined with aging in oak barrels, imbues “L’Ascendant” with both depth and freshness, capturing the essence of Verzy’s chalky terroir. The Extra Brut dosage emphasizes the wine’s pure, mineral profile.

On the nose, “L’Ascendant” presents complex aromas of red apple, pear, and citrus, alongside subtle notes of honey, hazelnut, and a touch of spice from the oak aging. The palate is vibrant and layered, offering flavors of ripe orchard fruit, lemon zest, and a chalky minerality that reflects its Grand Cru origins. A fine, creamy mousse enhances the wine’s texture, while the Extra Brut finish leaves a precise, clean impression with lingering notes of salinity and spice.

This Champagne is an excellent choice for pairing with dishes like roasted poultry, truffle-infused risotto, or aged cheeses, where its depth and structure can shine. The 2017 base adds a youthful vibrancy to the solera-aged complexity, making “L’Ascendant” a fascinating choice for Champagne enthusiasts seeking a blend of tradition and innovation, capturing the character of Verzy’s terroir across multiple vintages.

Mouzon-Leroux is the only specialist we can think of from Verzy, one of the great Grand Crus of Montagne. This is pretty neat, because Verzy is a rare Grand Cru that actually points northeast, so it has very cool vineyards produces wines where mineral is far out in front of fruit. All of this is enhanced through organic and biodynamic farming, and a hands-off approach in the winery -- malos are allowed to occur naturally and virtually no sulphur is used. Mouzon-Leroux is one of the elite producers who can claim membership in the Special Club.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 90
"The NV Extra Brut L'Ascendant, Mouzon- Leroux's solera-style blend, is bright and focused from start to finish. Dried citrus peel, almond, spice, chamomile and dried flowers are beautifully delineated. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, 50% 2017 and 50% 2016 and 2014, so more of a multi-vintage blend than a true perpetual reserve or solera. Perhaps because of the base vintage or the low dosage (1 gram per liter), this edition feels a bit narrow, especially on the mid-palate and finish." -Vinous

Robert Parker

RP 92
"Disgorged in March 2021 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage, Mouzon's latest NV Extra-Brut L'ascendant Solera is based on the 2016 vintage, complemented by 50% reserve wines drawn from a solera established in 2010. Exhibiting aromas of citrus oil, crisp green orchard fruit, nashi pear, macadamia nuts and nougat, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and fleshy, with fine depth at the core, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. This has turned out very nicely."

Wine Spectator

WS 91
"A vibrant Champagne, with aromas and flavors of white raspberry, mandarin orange peel, almond blossoms and salted almond set on a vivacious bead. Creamy finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
