What is this wine?
Montevertine, located in Radda in Chianti Classico, is one of Tuscany’s most revered estates. Founded by Sergio Manetti in the 1960s, it became a reference point for pure Sangiovese, outside the Chianti Classico DOCG framework. The estate, now run by Sergio’s son Martino, produces three wines—all centered on Sangiovese. The Toscana Rosso is the estate’s “entry” bottling, a blend of Sangiovese with small amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo, aged in large Slavonian oak casks.
Why get this wine?
Though technically the estate’s simplest wine, Montevertine’s Rosso shares the same meticulous vineyard work and traditional winemaking as their flagship Pergole Torte. It offers an earlier-drinking expression of Radda’s high-altitude terroir, combining elegance, energy, and purity of fruit. The 2018 vintage, marked by freshness and finesse, makes this wine especially approachable and classically styled.
What does this wine taste like?
Bright cherry and red currant with floral notes of violet, alongside hints of herbs, earth, and spice. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and savory.
When should you drink this wine?
Enjoy now with classic Italian dishes—pasta with tomato sauces, roasted chicken, or salumi. It will continue to improve over the next 5–7 years. A brief decant helps reveal its aromatic lift.
