What is this wine?
Prunotto’s Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello 2016 is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the famed Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba—one of Barolo’s most historic and powerful sites. The Vigna Colonnello parcel, planted in the 1970s, sits on calcareous marl soils that yield structured yet elegant wines. Aged for at least five years before release (including 24 months in large oak), this Riserva represents the pinnacle of Prunotto’s Barolo portfolio.

Why get this wine?
Backed by Antinori’s stewardship, Prunotto has elevated traditional Barolo craftsmanship with precision and polish. The 2016 vintage is exceptional—considered one of the best in recent decades—offering perfect ripeness, balance, and aging potential. Vigna Colonnello stands out for its combination of power and finesse: a Barolo of depth, perfume, and impeccable structure that will reward long cellaring.

What does this wine taste like?
Complex and layered, with aromas of red cherry, violet, licorice, and tobacco. The palate is dense yet refined, showing ripe fruit, firm tannins, and savory mineral notes. Long, harmonious finish with classic Monforte grip and elegance.

When should you drink this wine?
Decant if drinking now, though it will evolve beautifully through 2040. Ideal with truffle risotto, braised beef, or aged cheeses. A collector’s Barolo for special occasions.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is a dark, potent wine. Black cherry, plum, leather, menthol, licorice, lavender and dried herbs all come together in this heady, strapping Barolo. The 2016 packs a pretty huge punch, but it is also elegant and quite distinctive." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

RP 92
"Only made in the best years, the Prunotto 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello shows classic lines, good sharpness and delicate aromas. The only thing lacking is intensity, and the rather subdued personality of this wine is reflected across the portfolio of new releases from this important estate. The wine gives a lot, but you end up wanting more. The delivery of fruit is simple and rather of fact with light structure and nice freshness. It will hopefully flesh out with more time in the bottle." -Monica Larner

"This has density and richness framing macerated plum, cherry, blackberry, leather, spice and a hint of toasty oak. Open yet also solidly structured, with a lingering, spicy aftertaste."
