The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel’s most iconic vineyards—a steep, slate-covered amphitheater that produces Rieslings known for their elegance and effortless balance. In the cool, precise 2021 vintage, Selbach-Oster crafted a Spätlese* that leans into the site’s natural poise.

Expect the hallmarks: delicate sweetness balanced by racy acidity, orchard fruit that feels weightless, and a mineral finish that stretches long and clean. The asterisk on the label (Spätlese) marks this as a bottling of particular selection—grapes harvested later, often from older vines, with extra depth and detail.

This is Riesling for the cellar—or the right moment at the table. Less about intensity than clarity. A wine that speaks softly, but stays with you.

Johannes Selbach is beyond a doubt one of the great producers in the wine world. But, being based in Germany (and not being called Egon Müller), their wines are available at totally reasonable prices. Usually we can stock many of them year-round. Possibly our favorite Mosel estate, Selbach is renowned for his ability to take a snapshot of a vineyard at one place in time with every bottling he makes. The Selbach family has been making wine in the Mosel for 400 hundred years, making them one of the oldest winemaking houses in the region. But the wines are not old-fashioned; in fact, they exemplify everything we love about modern day Mosel wines: racy minerality, finesse and beautifully balanced acidity.
