From the limestone-rich amphitheater of Pajé, Roagna's historical flagship Barbaresco carries the mineral purity of one of Barbaresco's most distinguished vineyards. Pajé's calcareous marl and active limestone give this wine extraordinary structure and aging potential. The vines average over 40 years old. Roagna's traditional approach brings extended maceration and years in Slavonian oak before release, yielding a wine built for the cellar. Fifth-generation Luca Roagna crafts Barbaresco as a meditation on terroir.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2020 Barbaresco Pajè opens with deeply pitched spice and menthol notes to play off a core of vibrant red Nebbiolo fruit. It offers lovely inner perfume and sweetness wrapped up in firm, sinewy tannins that frame it all. This is a fabulous young Barbaresco—a classically youthful wine that just needs time to emerge. In many ways, it embodies the natural reticence that is such a strong part of the local culture." -Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

WS 95
"In this multi-faceted red wine, aromas of rose petals meet earth and spicy undergrowth notes. Flavours of strawberry and cherry form the middle section, while a strong acidity and sinewy tannins support the taste. In the end, this wine is long and elegant, with a lingering aftertaste of ripe cherries.""

"The captivating Roagna 2020 Barbaresco Pajè beguiles with its flower shop aromas of red rose, lavender and violet that intertwine with forest floor, new leather and eucalyptus. On the elegant palate, notes of star anise, truffle and blood orange accent a red cherry core before a tangy mineral finish. Taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity keep it well balanced. Drink 2028–2038." -Kerin O'Keefe

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
Paje cru in Barbaresco. The parcel is Roagna's largest in Barbaresco, but is still only 1.83 hecatares.
Orientation
Southwest.
Soil
Pajé is particularly rich in calcareous marl soil with a high content of active limestone.
Viticulture
The vines that go into this wine range from 25 to 50 years old. All younger vines go into the Langhe Rosso. Older vines go into the Paje Vecchie Viti bottling.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 60-70 days.
Aging
The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
