What is this wine?

Domaine du Collier is the small but highly respected estate of Antoine Foucault, son of the legendary Charly Foucault of Clos Rougeard. Based in Saumur, the domaine is farmed organically, with meticulous care in both vineyard and cellar. La Charpentrie is a single-vineyard cuvée from old-vine Cabernet Franc grown on limestone-rich soils in Brézé. Vinification is traditional, with long élévage in large, neutral oak, yielding wines of remarkable purity and longevity.

Why get this wine?

This is one of the Loire’s most sought-after Cabernet Francs, offering Clos Rougeard-level quality at a fraction of the price. Production is tiny, demand is huge, and the wines age beautifully—making them treasures for any serious Loire or Cabernet Franc lover. The 2021 vintage in the Loire produced fresh, elegant wines with precision and lift, making La Charpentrie especially vibrant and terroir-driven.

What does this wine taste like?

Refined and structured, with aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant, violets, and graphite. The palate is elegant yet powerful, showing red and black fruits, herbal spice, and chalky minerality, all wrapped in fine, persistent tannins.

When should you drink this wine?

Excellent now with a decant to soften its youthful edges, but best from 2026 onward as it gains complexity. Ideal with roast lamb, duck, or earthy mushroom dishes. Can cellar gracefully for 15–20 years.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 93
"As usual, this overperforming estate from clay-limestone soils has produced a red wine crafted from ancient vines that punches above its weight. The 2021 Saumur Rouge La Charpentrie has delicate notes of violet, cherries, flowers, iris and dark wild berries. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated with a fleshy core of fruit, it’s satiny and enveloping, concluding with a mineral, smoky and delicate pencil-lead finish. It will offer a broad drinking window." -Yohan Castaing
