Te Mata Estate represents classic New Zealand Bordeaux winemaking, and Awatea, first released in 1982, continues to showcase Hawke's Bay's finest Cabernet/Merlot expression. The 2022 vintage (hand harvested March 20-27) comprises 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 14% Cabernet Franc—a blend that captures the region's best characteristics. Blackberry and bay leaf on the nose give way to ripe red currants, sea spray, roses, chocolate, and black olive. Vanilla, cedar, and faint menthol character layer over a core of perfectly ripe Black Doris plum. Critics have called this "magnificent wine and tremendous value" and praised it for "mouthfilling with deep blackcurrant, plum, spice and herb flavours" in a "savoury, supple style showing excellent vigour and harmony." This is New Zealand Bordeaux at its finest.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2022 Awatea has a hard act to follow after three stellar vintages, and it's certainly not as dense nor impressive. It does provide a more classical example. Aromatically, it's very attractive with classic Bordeaux blend aromas of blackcurrant, plum, blackcurrant leaf, balsamic and spices of oak and pencil lead. It's a mid-weight, more restrained style with a moderate, finely textured tannin and a sense of old-world dark chocolate bitterness, which is a nice twist." —Rebecca Gibb MW

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 2022 Awatea Cabernets Merlot is floral and layered with cassis and raspberry, chalk and tobacco, paprika dolce and pink peppercorns. This is modern claret at its finest, and I find it to be beguiling in that way. It's softer and a little less structural than the 2021 but with so much cushioning and fruit. The tannins are firm through the finish, and I feel that balances the sweet fruit well. Yes." —Erin Larkin
