Tement, Zieregg Steilriegel Grosse Lage Sudsteiermark Morillon (Chardonnay), 2020
is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
If you think of Austria primarily as Grüner Veltliner country, Tement’s Morillon from Zieregg Steilriegel will rewire your palate. This is Chardonnay—locally called Morillon—grown on steep, limestone-rich slopes at the Slovenian border and vinified with the same precision and ambition as top-tier white Burgundy.
Zieregg is one of Austria’s great terroirs, and the Steilriegel sub-parcel is its steepest, most exposed face—a “Grosse Lage” (Grand Cru equivalent) of pure limestone. The site gives fruit of incredible concentration and mineral focus, and Tement, a family estate farming biodynamically and working with minimal intervention, captures that intensity without weight.
The 2020 is thrillingly precise: citrus oil, white peach, and crushed stones lead into a palate that’s deep but taut, with vibrant acidity and a long, salty finish. It’s fermented with native yeasts, aged in large oak, and bottled unfiltered—every step taken to preserve purity, structure, and expression.
This is not just great Morillon—it’s a wine that can stand next to Puligny or Corton-Charlemagne and hold its own. Age-worthy, cerebral, and deeply delicious, it’s built for the cellar or for your finest seafood dinner tonight.
