Cult Cornas from the appellation's greatest living traditionalist, in a classical vintage and a softer style. Thierry Allemand learned his craft apprenticing under Robert Michel by day and the legendary Noël Verset by night before going solo, and his Chaillot cuvée comes from the steep east/southeast-facing slopes above the village—the gentler counterpoint to his more powerful Reynard bottling. 2014 was a classical Northern Rhône vintage: cooler, more lifted, less weight than the warmer years, which suits Chaillot's natural elegance perfectly. Eleven years on, this has settled into prime drinking territory, where Allemand's no-sulfur-until-bottling, minimalist hand lets Cornas speak in its native dialect of black fruit, violet, iron, and smoke. One of the few addresses where the legend matches the wine in the glass.

"The 2014 Cornas Chaillot surpasses the 2011. This has much more intensity and complexity, black fruit laced with star anis, cardamom and meat juices, all very cohesive and utterly alluring. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, harmonious and quite saline, unfolding on the finish endowed with greater concentration and grip than the 2011, a dash of white pepper lingering long on the finish. It needs more time in bottle, but this has a lot of potential." —Neal Martin

More about Thierry Allemand

Thierry Allemand didn't just revive Cornas—he redefined it. Learning under Joseph Michel and Noël Verset in the early 1980s, he proved that this austere appellation could produce balanced, elegant, age-worthy reds without heavy tannin and new oak as crutches. Only 500 cases each of Chaillot and Reynard, five hectares total, organic farming, minimal sulfur: Allemand is one of the closest things the Northern Rhône has to a cult figure, and he earned it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled ribeye with crushed pepper, roast lamb leg, duck breast with pan jus, venison loin, mushroom-forward dishes with fresh thyme, aged hard cheeses like aged Comté, or a serious cassoulet on a winter night.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby moving toward garnet. Blackberry, blueberry, violet, cracked pepper, iron, olive tapenade, and smoked bacon. Medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannin, bright acidity, and a long, mineral, savory finish. Energetic and lifted, drinking well.
