There is the Tuscany that behaves like Bordeaux—sometimes almost literally, with Bordeaux grape varieties—and there is the Tuscany that behaves like Burgundy, with an emphasis on silky fruit purity and bright, elegant flavors. If we had to pick a paragon for this latter style, we might select Montevertine in Chianti. But Brunello has its own worthy contender for the title, and it is Salicutti.

The biggest mark against Salicutti may be its size. It produces only about 10% of the quantities coming from Montevertine—barely enough to be the paragon of anything! But it makes up for it with its sheer quality, as those lovers of Tuscan wine who have gotten to know Salicutti now rank it in the very top echelon.

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente is like a veritable florist shop on the nose blending roses and jasmine with lavender and wet stone before giving way to dried strawberries. It sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk energized by zesty acidity as mineral-laced wild berry fruits add a crunchy sensation toward the close. The 2019 finishes with a pleasantly bitter tinge. An herbal thrust and flinty tannins clamp down hard reminding the taster that this youthful Brunello is just at the start of its long journey to maturity." -Vinous

"This wine comes from a vineyard site with compact clay soils and sees extended skin maceration. It comes as no surprise therefore to find extra concentration and intensity in the Salicutti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente. This is a wine of impeccable balance that pits dark fruit weight against lifted almost ethereal aromas. This is a difficult line to walk and the Sorgente proceeds beautifully. On the one hand you get a warm toasted note of roasted chestnut brioche or sweet challah bread and on the other you get tart redcurrant and grenadine. There is an upward fruit crescendo that matches the chalky fine-grained nature of the tannins. This wine ends on the proverbial high note. To think that Sorgente used to make the estate's Rosso di Montalcino and now it has come this far. Although I have had my eye on this estate for a while Salicutti is one of the breakout stars of this report. Sabine and Felix Eichbauer are relative newcomers to this storied Tuscan appellation having acquired this estate in 2015 from the talented Francesco Leanza. The Munich-based couple completed a new winery and revisited the winemaking program making small tweaks yet maintaining the soulful character of the wines established under the previous ownership. This estate is a true gem and one that any Brunello lover should know and collect."

"The highest of Salicutti?s vineyards Sorgente sits on heavier clay with a slight incline to the southwest. It is usually the last to be picked and was previously destined for the estate?s Rosso di Montalcino ? yet this 2019 makes for a very convincing Brunello demonstrating Sangiovese?s ability to soar weightlessly while reaching great depths. A splendid precision of peony red currant blossom and red cherry aromas accompanies a sumptuousness to the palate where plump red plum and watermelon are underscored by brilliant citrussy acidity. Suede-like tannins seem almost an afterthought yet hold this wine together effortlessly"

"A pretty red elegant and delicate with no shortage of strawberry raspberry and rose flavors. Harmonious and solidly built with vibrant acidity and a dense line of tannins guarding the mineral-infused finish. This really increases in intensity."

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

Sorgente, a 1.5-hectare cru at 450m facing SW, previously made Salicutti’s Rosso di Montalcino. It is named for the water source (sorgente) that runs below. As the vines have gotten older and more expressive, it is now elevated to Brunello stature. Sorgente has more clay in the topsoil compared to the other parcels sites. 20-40 day macerations. Aged for three years in 1000L and 1500L casks and a year in bottle. Effusive red-fruited and spicy nose. Open-knit on palate, slightly rosey and exotic, complicated by carob, cacao, and orange zest. Energetic, with a salty, lengthy soil imprint. 2450 bottles made.
